Smart Pension sponsors London Rails Girls to help women learn to code.
Smart Pension's development team is set to head to Rails Girls next weekend as part of a two-day workshop aimed at demystifying coding for women.
The digital workplace pension provider is also sponsoring the event alongside other brands including Deliveroo and Zendesk. Rails Girls is a global initiative with the goal of making technology more approachable for women and brings in coding experts to mentor recipients.
Members of Smart's engineering team are donating their Friday night and Saturday to help female participants discover the exciting world of web development through the free Ruby on Rails initiative.
Smart Pension engineer and London Rails Girls founder Maria Khait said: "Rails Girls London is so grateful to have such an amazing support from London development community - our volunteer coaches and our sponsors.
"With the help of companies like Smart Pension, we are able to introduce more and more women to programming and give them the needed skills to kick-start their development career if one chooses to."
Smart Pension chief technology officer Sam Barton said: "This is a brilliant initiative and we were delighted we could help! At Smart, we have an outstanding team of developers, project managers, QA testers, architects, business analysts, UX, UI and copy designers. Currently, just under 50 per cent are women - but this is still frustratingly rare in dev teams. Rails Girls is starting from scratch to offer practical support to make it easier for women to gain access to coding skills and ultimately employment in the tech industry."
Workshop participants can learn sketching, prototyping, basic programming and get introduced to the world of technology. The aim is to give tools and a community for women to understand technology and to build their ideas.
The workshops start on Friday night November 30 and continue on Saturday December 1.
